The Longest Pregnancy Ever

The longest pregnancy in history has finally come to an end! I can't actually back that claim up but if it only takes you two weeks to form a new habit that can last a lifetime than 38 weeks of a pregnant wife might as well qualify as a geological time period. The time of Graviditas is over, bring on the new age of enlightenment, baby gadgets and world peace!

I've received advice from many sources, parents, books and websites, about the joys of pregnancy and bonding with your kids while in the womb. And many of these sources believe a baby should be born naturally, labor should start whenever the bun in the oven is ready. I'm sure for some people this miracle of biology between mother and child is a mystical/religious experience. I'm also sure these people had almost no pregnancy related problems and one of their life goals was to be pregnant. Both of which are perfectly fine but I've found, as a guy, that after almost 40 weeks of planning and preparing I was ready to get a baby out of the deal and get moving. Bring on the induction!

Guys are task-oriented and there's absolutely nothing we can do except put together baby stuff and wait. So the sooner they're out, the sooner we can get started and we're one day closer to the last dirty diaper.

Remember to keep hope alive and there's a light at the end of the tunnel, or canal. (You'll think that's funny when it's your turn.)

Guy Recommendations:

- After about 24 weeks (6 months) ask about an induction date. Most doctors have specific days of the week they perform inductions, aka induce labor with a drug called pitocin. And many doctors prefer to set a date to help you and themselves plan ahead. I'd spring this at a doctor visit, just get it out there. It's easier to ask for forgiveness and there's no take backs in pregnancy.

- Everyone is going to have a different opinion. Having a planned induction date worked for us, but many people feel you just shouldn't interfere with nature and will have no problem telling you what they think you should do. These same people somehow think that ibuprofen pills occur in nature.
